Introduction to Friends

Hi my name is Fiona and I've been watching Friends since I can remember, so I feel like I am the perfect person to be telling you all about it.

Friends is an american sitcom about six friends living in New York. In my next few blogs I'm going to be talking about ethnography of Friends.

Pheobe Buffay and Joey Tribbiani

I decided to do Joey and Pheobe together because they are the ones in the group who if had to matched up with someone within the six of them would be matched up.

Pheobe, well where do I start... Pheobe is a white american. Pheobe moved to New York city when she was 14 she lived a hard life on the streets because her mum had killed herself and her step dad was in prison. In the end Pheobe finds out her mum who killed herself wasn't her birth mother just a friend of her real birth mum she also meets her birth mother who tells her everything. In the group Pheobe is known to be the "weird one" of the group she is a vegitarian animal lover and hates the idea of wearing fur. Because she didn't have a normal upbringing she is inocent and childish. Pheobe's real dad ran out on her mum and her sister but she meets him in one episode. Yes i mentioned Pheobe's sister who is infact her twin. They are identical twins and they never speak because they just don't get on. In one episode Pheobe opens up about her feelings towards her sister when her sister is dating Joey.

So that brings me to my next point which is Joey Tribbiani, he comes from an Italian Catholic family he is the only son in his family and has seven sisters, they all look alike. In the group Joey is know to be the childish stupid one sort of the adult who mentally never grew up. He eats out of the others fidges and his room mate Chandler (who we'll get to later) pays all the bills and pays for different things Joey needs. Joey is a stereotypical good looking but stupid. He does very well with the ladies. Joey works as an actor, well when i say actor he gets auditions which sometimes he does well in but other times he just fails. However despite not being the best his friends are always supportive of him.   

Ross Geller and Monica Geller

Ok let's start with Ross he is the eldest child in the Geller family. During the episodes we get clues that at school Ross wasn't good with girls and was a nerd. He is very proud of his intelligence, he is

esspecially good at science which leads us to his job. Ross is a paleontologist and he has a tendencey of lecturing his friends on this subject so there for is know as the smart one of the group. During the ten seasons of Friends Ross marrys three times, one of those woman was Rachel who is another member of the six friends but we'll get to that later. So there is also a joke between the group that he is always getting a divorce.

Now for Monica, Monica is Ross's younger sister. The joke is that when Monica was in school she was very fat and now she is fit and skinny and very energetic. In the programme Monica is sort of a mother figure to the rest of the friends she is extremely tidy and probably has OCD. She is also very organised.

Monica and Ross are brother and sister they didn't exactly get on when they were younger but they are now friends and have the same friendship group. The Geller parents are the parents of the six friends that are shown the most within the episodes. In fact there was one episode based around them and their wedding anniversary. We are shown in Friends that Ross and Monica's parents prefere Ross and the mother is always critisizing Monica. The Geller Family are a white american family.
